Pioneer
locomotive No. 42 "Anglo-Saxon" was built by Baldwin Locomotive
Works in 1880 to conquer the steep grades and sharp curves of
Colorado’s Denver & Rio Grande Railway. For decades, the highly
successful 2-8-0 Consolidation Class was the "standard motive power"
of the narrow gauge railroad. Sold to Otto Mear’s spectacular
Silverton Railroad in 1887, No. 42 served faithfully for an
additional twenty years before being retired around 1909.
Operating a live-steam locomotive
is much different from running an electrically powered engine. It
is a more hands-on, interactive experience. The locomotive must be
periodically fueled, oiled, and watered. As supplied, the C-16 is
manually controlled, which means that you must actually drive the
locomotive using the controls in the cab, just as you would a
full-size engine. |
