JNR 9600
The JNR 9600 was the first class of locomotive to evolve from a new
Japanese equipment procurement policy which required not only larger
locomotives than were then currently in service but also production only
by Japanese manufacturers. Unique design feature of the Class 9600 were a
wider than usual firebox that rested on the main frames rather than
fitting between the frames, which allowed the ample generation of steam,
and the ability to convert the wheel gauge to operate on either JNR narrow
gauge tracks of 1,067mm or standard gauge of 1,485mm. Her profile
displayed a shorter than usual chimney and domes which gave her a sturdy
and powerful look, somewhat reminiscent of contemporary German
locomotives. She earned the affectionate nickname of "Kyuuroku" (96) and
no less than 770 were produced during the period from 1918 to 1926. The
Class 9600 operated on many lines throughout Japan except for those on
Shikoku Island. About 250 standard gauge class 9600 locomotives were
delivered to occupied China where they operated until the end of the war.
After the war, they remained in mainland China and Taiwan; in Taiwan they
were re-identified as the TNR Class DT850. They also remained in service
in Japan until 1975 working the branch lines on Hokkaido and Kyushu
Islands.
